Happy Birthday to Li Yin

First of all, Li Yin, Happy Birthday!!!
She is 17 now!!! Can drive already, yay.
Our class and some other friends had a surprise birthday party for Li Yin on Monday,
We met at church around 8 something then we all went to Li Yin's house,
We waited for everyone to arrive and quietly went into her house,
Her father let us in, he knew about it too, hehe, Kin Kit kept her in her room, great job!!
We lighted the cake and brought it to her room, her expression when she opened the door and saw us was priceless
The surprise was a success.
Later we all went down to the living room to eat and drink, Li Yin's dad prepared some refreshments for us, Thank you uncle
Then we each said a wish for Li Yin, there were many wishes, some which are funny
We later played charades where someone had to act out a movie chosen for them and we had to guess it, it was really fun and some of them were really hard like Fast and Furious, haha
Everyone went home around 9 something, it was a birthday to remember
Hope to be able to surprise more people, haha,
Anyways, Good luck for SPM, you'll do well, god bless and see everyone 2moro

What Are We Doing Now?

Often in our lives we strife to achieve as much and as high as we can. When we were students (ok, most of you are still students) we were told to score as much As as possible, 7As, 9As..even 18As? Crazy. Do they really have so many subjects these days? Lucky I belong to the “older” days :)

Later on when we are working, most of us will aim to have our own business, especially guys. And if we’re working, we aim to be the CEOs or COOs of multi national companies. (remember those days when teachers ask us to write our ambitions, and the boy next to you wrote “policeman”?) In our journey to the top, we had probably neglected a lot of other important things in life. Maybe our relationships, or maybe our Christian walk. I don’t know. What I do know is there are many things that we can do to enjoy life to the fullest, such as going fishing, playing the guitar, or taking a sip of wine now and then. Things that we have no time to do unless it’s public holiday.

I recently read an article from the Star Biz and it caught my attention as it’s on one of my favourite CEO, Datuk Seri Idris Jala. Some of you may not know him, but I’m sure you are more than likely to have “use his products”, as he is none other than the captain of MAS. Oh, he is also a Christian by the way.
The article talks about his life passion, how he still finds time to go to church every week, his passion for music (he plays guitar in a high end club occasionally) and his love for fishing. He even said this – “Once I went fishing (on) Vancouver Island. The skyline was beautiful and we caught fish and ate it with wine. That was such a perfect moment. And I thought, that would be such a perfect way to die!”
For someone who has managed to turn an airline from incurring heavy loses to making substantial profits in just 3 years to say that, it really speaks volume. It shows that in life there is indeed much more than just making money or climbing the corporate ladder, even for a CEO.

Let me end my post with this story:

An investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked.

Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna.

The banker complimented the fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The fisherman replied, “Only a little while.”

The banker then asked, “Why didn’t you stay out longer and catch more fish?”

The fisherman said, “With this I have more than enough to support my family’s needs.”

The banker then asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

The fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, go for walks with my wife, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my friends. As you can see, I have a full and busy life.”

The banker scoffed, “I am a Harvard MBA and can help you. You should spend more time fishing; and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat! With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats.

“Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution.

“You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to the capital city. After that, who knows, maybe you could take on the world!”

The fisherman asked, “But, how long will this all take?”

To which the banker replied, “I’d say about 15 to 20 years.”

“But what then?” asked the fisherman.

The banker laughed and said, “That’s the best part! When the time is right, you would announce an IPO (public listing of a company) and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions.”

“Millions?…Then what?” the fisherman continued prodding.

The banker said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, go for romantic walks with your wife, and in the evenings you could sip wine, play guitar and sing songs with your friends!”
To which the fisherman mused, “Now, isn’t that strange? Isn’t that what I’m doing now?”
Reading Idris Jala’s story, I am happy that despite the busyness of corporate life, he still goes fishing, plays the guitar, and takes a sip of wine now and then.
Surely, he must be in the right job right now. What about us? Maybe life really doesn’t need to be that complicated after all.

The Purpose Of Life

Some years ago in Northern India, there lived a missionary who served and ministered to the poor and outcasts of society. One morning, as the missionary was preparing for his morning meditations, he noticed a little boy, not older than 8, observing him. And so he began chatting with the boy..

(M: missionary, B: boy)
M: What are you doing?
B: I go to school
M: Why do you go to school?
B: To study
M: Why do you study?
B: To get smart
M: Why do you want to get smart?
B: So I can get a good job
M: Why do you want to get a good job?
B: So I can make lots of money
M: Why do you want to make lots of money?
B: So I can buy food
M: Why do you want to buy food?
B: So I can eat
M: Why do you want to eat?
B: To live
M: Why do you live?

At this point, the little boy thought for a minute, scratched his head, looked him in the face and asked back, “Sir, why do I live?” He paused for a moment in mid-thought, then gave his own sad answer, “To die!”

If we believe that heaven and hell exist, are we then living for eternity – for which Jesus gave His life? Or are we still living, as the little boy said, “to die”? A girlfriend of mine once said (half-jokingly), “If I know that the world is ending tomorrow, I’ll want to get married today”:) But is that really the thing on our minds when we see God?

We rather ignore or pretend away such questions because they make us feel uncomfortable. They just open the door for more questions, which we mostly don’t know the answers to. They rock our boat of safe religion. We can’t ask those questions and remain unchanged, or we’d dare not call ourselves Christians. They challenge us to give an answer for what we believe in. They push us to make a decision. But God does not just leave us to sort things out on our own. He gave us Jesus to teach us how to live. And more than that, He gives the Holy Spirit to those who will rise up and live for Him, to those who’d humble themselves to ask Him to come use them in whatever way possible. Have you asked the Holy Spirit to use you today?

A NEW DAWN.......

Ok, younger youth.” Finally principle Andrew called our class, and I saw JuPing just stepping in, and gestured for him to go out. He duly obliged. I was expecting him to say “Hey, I’m not your class anymore leh..”, but guess I was wrong. I looked around, and all of us were out there, though there were a few absent ones.

I was a bit anxious, coz’ I knew this is the time whereby we’ll officially “let go” our Form 5 students and welcome the new students from inter. We were in church, but somehow there is a kind of feeling like we were in air port, bidding farewell to friends going “overseas”.

And so Andrew called up the older youth class, and duly conducted the “promotion”. I waited for THEM to cross over, but surprisingly none of them did. Andrew asked again. Still no movement. Gosh, guys, come on, we’re in public ok?? It’s like a dad asking the child to come over, but maybe they had done something wrong, and choose not to do so.

Within that few moments I was thinking why are they not moving. Maybe they miss our class. Maybe. Or maybe they miss me for being such a nice teacher. Haha. (so perasan). Maybe not Deric, if miss also miss the stylish Meng Ching or firm-but-playable Joyce. Maybe they are just trying to capture attention. Well, maybe. There are a lot of maybes, but deep down I was happy, because I felt that somehow, they love our class for whatever reasons. Hopefully Andrew will say “ok la, no need promote you all, you may go back to your class”, but then, finally Joshua said “come on la, let’s go over”, and gestures for Ju Ping and Joel to do so. I was startled, but eventually managed to shake the boys’ hand. I hope they can feel what I’m feeling. It was more than just a handshake to me. But I know they will learn new things under James and Patricia, and tell myself it’ll be good for them. Unfortunately, Weng Kit was in NS, Julien was dunno where, so there will be no official “promotion” for them.

Nevertheless I’m glad that there will be new students, can sense that they are just as lovely as everyone, but being the first day, sure a bit quiet la. I managed to talk to Ju Ping on msn later and he has some good words and encouragement for me, thanks bro! Wanted to share a simple sharing, but due to time constraint I postponed it and instead shared on my plans and objectives for our class after playing game of “mixed identity”. I enjoyed the game with the class, but somehow, playing that game with my peers is slightly more exciting, after all we played faster and have Jhow Wei playing with us, and who can forget his classic “mou la” action :) but still, I think we achieved our objective of getting to know each other, so great game students!

Wow.. so long liao, but never mind, if you have time, do bear with me…

We shared and stressed on the need to do prayer and devotion more. Hopefully the students got my point. We will also be having surprises birthdays, and hopefully you guys will love it. It’ll take quite some effort to do it, but I think it’ll be a whole load of fun, especially for the birthday boy or girl. We also appointed Yean Lynn and Yee San to be class “monitor and coordinator”. Actually I haven asked Yee San, but I hope he won’t mind hehe.. Will ask him later.. Thanks YL & YS… And lastly is this page you’re looking at – the birth of the first ever Sunday school class BLOG! Yeah! Thanks to Brandon, Yilin, Faith & Austin, who is willing to help us manage it. So people, don’t waste their willingness to help, use them! Bug them! Post something, be it your thoughts, love story, experience, opinions etc etc.. Ehem.. no gossips and “excessive language” though…Nevertheless really appreciate those who are helping out, you guys are just… fantastic!

I thank God for this wonderful new class, as well as the 2008 class. This previous 6 months or so has thought me so much in teaching SS. God has really opened me up to a whole new perspective in teaching SS. It was an experience I never had imagined. Maybe it was the wonderful students and co teachers I had this opportunity to work with, or probably it was the bond we had foster after NA camp. Above all, I’m sure it’s God who has touched our class, re-energised us, making everything clicked like a well oiled machine, making learning so conductive, yet extremely fun and memorable, at least for me…

And hereby I’ll like to welcome Faith, Darryl, Yeng Mao, Peter, Jane and Kah Yeng, hopefully you will be able to learn and grow with us, while indulging yourself with loads of fun! *drum rollsss* *applauseee* We may have “lost” Teacher Joyce, but hey, there’s a younger version of her in class though hehe…

And to Juping, Joel, Joshua, Weng Kit and Julien, thank you for making the class of 2008 so memorable. We may have “lost” you, but I’m sure if you all can grow even more by 2009, it’s worth it. One thing remains, though, that wherever you go, nothing can change the fact that you all will always be part of the awesome class of 2008, and looking back I can only give thanks to God. And a new dawn thus begins…
